Pneumovax 23 vaccine is a Pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine that provides protection against infections caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae. The 23 serotypes of bacteria that frequently cause bacteremia, meningitis, and pneumonia are covered.

Composition: Pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine

Mechanism of Action:

In order to combat 23 pneumococcal serotypes, Pneumovax 23 (PPSV23) stimulates B-cells to create IgG and IgM antibodies. It produces a T-cell independent immunological response, which is less potent than that of protein-conjugated vaccines, because it solely contains polysaccharides and no protein carrier. By improving opsonization, the produced antibodies enable neutrophils and macrophages to identify and eliminate Streptococcus pneumoniae, preventing infections such as meningitis, pneumonia, and bacteremia. However, because the vaccine does not strongly induce memory B-cell production, immunity is short-lived, and high-risk individuals must be vaccinated again after 5–10 years. Furthermore, it doesn't work on kids less than two years old since their immune systems aren't strong enough to fight off polysaccharide antigens.

Uses:

Prevention of pneumonia, meningitis, blood & ear infection

Dosage and Administration:

One 0.5 mL dosage administered subcutaneously or intramuscularly. After five years, revaccination may be required for high-risk individuals.
