Brand Name: Colistin
Composition: Colistimethate Sodium
Mechanism of Action:
Colistin sodium is an inactive prodrug that the body transforms into its active form after administration. Colistin binds to phospholipids and lipopolysaccharides (LPS) found in Gram-negative bacteria's outer membrane to produce a bactericidal effect. Bacterial cell death results from this binding's disruption of the cell membrane, which increases its permeability and allows cellular contents to flow out.
Uses:
Severe Bacterial Infections
Dosage and Administration:
Usually administered as an intravenous infusion. The severity of the infection, the patient's body weight, and renal function all affect dosage. Healthcare practitioners must closely monitor it in order to make adjustments based on toxicity risk and therapeutic response.

How to use this Medication?
Colistimethate injections are usually given every 6 to 12 hours as a muscle injection or as a powder and liquid mixture that is injected intravenously over a period of 3 to 5 minutes. The length of therapy will depend on your health, the type of illness, and how well you respond to the drug. It can also be administered as a continuous infusion lasting 22–23 hours.
Even if you feel better, keep using the colistimethate injection until the entire prescription is finished. Your infection might not be fully treated and the bacteria might develop antibiotic resistance if you stop taking the colistimethate injection too soon or miss doses.
