Mechanism of Action:

Trientine acts by binding to excess copper ions in the body and producing a stable, water-soluble complex that is eliminated via urine, lowering harmful copper accumulation in organs, particularly the liver and brain. It also inhibits copper absorption from the gastrointestinal tract, which lowers copper levels even more. Unlike Penicillamine, another copper chelator, Trientine has a lower affinity for important metals such as zinc and does not have substantial immune-related side effects.

Dosage and Administration:

The normal dose varies with the severity of Wilson's disease and the patient's reaction. It is typically administered at 750-2000 mg per day, divided into 2-4 doses. Take on an empty stomach (at least an hour before or two hours after eating). Swallow whole with water, without crushing or chewing.

How to use this Medication?

Take this medication orally on an empty stomach, at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after meals, as advised by your doctor, usually 2 to 4 times per day. Take this medication at least 1 hour apart from other medications, foods, or milk.

If you're taking this medication in pill form, drink them whole with water. Please do not open or eat the capsules. If you accidently come into contact with the capsule contents, wash the area with water right away to avoid an allergic response.
