Brand Name: Oxaltero
Composition: Oxaliplatin
Mechanism of Action:
Following its metabolism in the body, oxaliplatin produces reactive platinum molecules. These substances attach themselves to DNA and cause DNA strands to cross-link, which prevents cancer cells from replicating and transcriptionally using DNA. This eventually results in apoptosis, or cell death, especially in malignant cells that divide quickly. Oxaliplatin is effective against some cancer cells that are resistant to other medicines like cisplatin and carboplatin, but it has a different toxicity profile than other platinum-based medications.
Uses:
Colorectal Cancer
Dosage and Administration:
Usually given once every two or three weeks as part of a treatment cycle, the standard dosage of Oxaliplatin is based on body surface area (mg/m2) and is used in conjunction with other chemotherapy medicines such as leucovorin and fluorouracil. Over two to six hours, the medication is gradually injected.
