Mechanism of Action:

In order to target virus-infected cells, valganciclovir first transforms into ganciclovir in the body. A viral enzyme (UL97) in CMV-infected cells activates ganciclovir to produce ganciclovir triphosphate. By inhibiting viral DNA polymerase, this active form prevents the replication of viral DNA. It prevents the virus from replicating by causing premature chain termination as it integrates into the viral DNA. Infected cells are primarily impacted by this selective action, which helps manage the viral load while protecting healthy cells.
